A new toy...
Since I'm shooting the Teen Achievers Gala next week (for a good cause, yo) and my friend Aisha's wedding in two months (yay! for $$$), I bought a fancy new flash, the SB-400. It's a more powerful flash than the onboard flash on the D40, plus it tilts 60/75/90 degrees in order to allow you to "bounce" the flash off the ceiling versus pointing it directly at the subject. Here's some pictures I took illustrating the difference (there are some better ones on the site I linked above) - G was kind enough to be model.
The first picture is with no flash (duh).
This pic was taken on Auto, with the D40 flash.
The rest of these pictures use the 1/60 exposure and f/4 aperture chosen by the Auto setting (only in Manual this time). The first picture is with the SB-400 pointed directly at the subject. You can see it's a much more powerful flash than the D40 flash.
Ok, now things are starting to look better. The next three pics use the flash tilted 60, 75, and 90 degrees respectfully. They may all look the same to you, but they look WAY better than the first two with flash. See how G looks less bright and glar-y (that may not be a real word, but I think you'll get my drift).

As I am just strictly a point and click kind of girl, I'm amazed to see the nuances when using really good equipment! Congrats on your jobs, and your new toy. And, how generous of G to give his time to be a superstar in the blogging world! ;)
xoxo
When will our friend post more fab photos?!? We miss you, Jenn!
:)
What a patient kid :-) You are so good. Awesome hobby!
Hey Jenn, this is Mike, from WAYYY back.. Nice blog. Found the link on your FB page and saw this. Looks like you've realized the benefit of bounce flash. I hope the wedding went well, and I hope it didn't go anything like my first one. STRESS! Anyway, if you REALLY want to improve your flash photography, step up to a SB-600, SB-800 or SB-900. These let you swivel the head left and right, in addition to just tilting it, so you can actually bounce the flash into a corner. Sounds weird, but this actually gives some direction to the light, like a studio flash. Visit http://www.planetneil.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/ for great info on making your flash look natural. You'll never go back to direct flash again. Take care.
